Guidance holds Community Involvement Seminar

University of Cagayan Valley (UCV) Guidance Center held a Community Involvement seminar last Feb. 10, 2016 at the Greyhounds Gymnasium, UCV Balzain Campus, with the theme “Making Difference: Imparting knowledge, sharing love, helping others.”

In order to accommodate the thousands of second and third year students from the schools and colleges of the university, the seminar was divided into two sessions – second years in the morning, and third years in the afternoon.

The community involvement and development seminar aims to enable students to share their time and energy to help the academe and the community by building student initiative.

Needs assessment survey results show that students need to be more involved in community development.

EIC is 4th in Nationals

Norlu head Quer Brinn Urbina, a BSEd English Major from the School of Liberal Arts and Teacher Education (SLATE) stood fourth place in the Poetry competition during the 15th Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference (LHEPC) of the Association of Luzonwide Tertiary Press Advisers Association (ALTPA) last Feb. 4-6, 2016 at Hotel Felicidad, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) sponsored event was attended by over 900 students and advisers engaged in higher education campus journalism – delegates came from across the country namely Cebu, Cordillera, MIMAROPA, CALABARZON, and NCR.

SOC joins 'Oplan: Lambat-Sibat'

Third-year Criminology students of the University of Cagayan Valley (UCV), along with their advisers, attended a seminar on the 'Oplan: Lambat-Sibat' program spearheaded by the Intelligence Division of the Cagayan Provincial Police Office (CPPO) last Feb. 11, 2016 at the Instructional Media Center (IMC), Judge Ventura Perez Building, UCV Balzain campus, Tuguegarao City.

The program, where aims to inform participants of their role in curbing crime by being vigilant of criminality in their communities, and to develop camaraderie between PNP and the people to reinforce peace and unity 'among fellowmen.'

Criminology adviser Alexander Urbano, a participant in the event says that the program helps the students to "prevent crimes, boost their morale, and have a positive image."

QMS runs 2nd IQA

University of Cagayan Valley's Quality Management System (QMS) office conducted its second Internal Quality Audit (IQA) for the school year last Feb. 11-12, 2016 to identify university-wide improvement areas in compliance with ISO 9001:2008.

Quality Controller Ms. Aileen Collado says "We are working for the students... as an overall reason for the existence of QMS, aligned to the dreams and aspirations of the Board of Directors."

The second IQA concludes the targeted number of internal audits before an external audit by UCV's supplier of standards services British Standards Institution (BSI) group, may be had.

QMS Director, Dr. Lolita Cabalza says that her office expects the external audit in May 2016 where BSI auditors will conduct follow-ups on UCV's improvement areas based on the first BSI audit.

Club Celebrates First Math Day

University of Cagayan Valley Math Club celebrated its first Math Day last Feb. 9, 2016 at the Greyhounds Gymnasium, UCV Balzain Campus, Tuguegarao City, with the theme “Mathematics: Simplifies Life, Multiplies Opportunities.”

The event was joined by delegates from the schools and colleges of the university like the College of Maritime Education (CME), School of Business Administration (SBA), College of Engineering (COE), College of Social Work (CSW), School of Criminology (SOC), School of Liberal Arts and Teacher Education (SLATE), and College of Information Technology (CIT) who competed in the Quiz Bee, Essay Writing, Slogan Writing, and Poster Making contests.

"I was challenged to strive harder" says Paula Tattao, Filipino Editor of The Norluzonian as she earned a spot in the top-fifteen during the Organization of Student Services Educators Inc. (OSSEI) National Conference on Campus Journalism and 9th Writing Competition photojournalism contest held at Baguio Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City last January 28-30, 2016.

In what seemed like an epiphany to the rookie Filipino Editor who just wanted to test her photojournalism skills, Tattao bested other competitors from various Colleges and Universities in the Philippines when her photos were flashed on screen in the conference hall during a presentation of finalists.

RCY-UCV Conducts First Solo Blood Drive

In partnership with the Philippine Red Cross Cagayan Chapter, the Red Cross Youth (RCY), UCV council conducted its first solo blood letting drive at The New Building last Feb. 3, 2016, with the theme "Red Cross: Always first, always ready, always there."

RCY UCV council is a student organization composed of student-leaders from the College of Health (COH) led by fourth year BS Nursing student Kathleen Kaye Taloza, along with their Advisers and Clinical Instructors Ms. Odessa Cristobal and Ms. Maria Zoraida Cusipag.

Sixteen students from the organization composed of Nursing and Midwifery students, along with four representatives from the Philippine Red Cross were present during the event where they ran tests and extracted blood from volunteers composed mainly of students.

Sen. Lapid 'visits' UCV: Where was the forum?

Classes were suspended as Senator Lito Lapid, famous for his role as Leon Guerrero, the bullet-splitting masked rider of the 80's, "visited" the University of Cagayan Valley last Feb. 3, 2016 in a bid to gather votes for his son, Mark Lapid who is running for senator under the Liberal Party.

The campaign program was held in a Greyhounds gymnasium full of students from the various schools and colleges of the university.

Faculty members and members of the administration such as the Chief of Staff, the Vice Presidents for Legal Affairs, Finance, Research, and Academics, as well as some Deans and Directors also attended the activity.
