Club Celebrates First Math Day

University of Cagayan Valley Math Club celebrated its first Math Day last Feb. 9, 2016 at the Greyhounds Gymnasium, UCV Balzain Campus, Tuguegarao City, with the theme “Mathematics: Simplifies Life, Multiplies Opportunities.”

The event was joined by delegates from the schools and colleges of the university like the College of Maritime Education (CME), School of Business Administration (SBA), College of Engineering (COE), College of Social Work (CSW), School of Criminology (SOC), School of Liberal Arts and Teacher Education (SLATE), and College of Information Technology (CIT) who competed in the Quiz Bee, Essay Writing, Slogan Writing, and Poster Making contests.

Winners in the contested events include (1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively): Jonas Gonzales (COE), Riza Jane Paguila (SBA) and Jerome Mingming (CME) for the Quiz Bee; Jerald Maguddayao (CME), Hazel Balao-as (CSW), and Rhealyn Gannaban (SBA) for Slogan Making; John Paul Quinto, Lester Agtarap (CIT), and Psalm David Apiado (CME) for Poster Making; and Katrina Tejada (SLATE), Edmun Consul (COE), and Josette Eclipse (SOC) for the Essay Writing contest.

A pageant was later held in the afternoon where Cydie Taliping and Bernadette Doca (CME) were crowned as Mr. and Ms. Mathematics 2016.

Jan Louise Fontiveros (SOC), Kathleen Callorina (SLATE), Julie Ann Pattaui (SLATE) and Charlyn Wanayan (CSW) meanwhile won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th runners up respectively. Conversely, Mars Kenneth Sibucao (SLATE), Jaylord Darauay (SLATE), Shaider Dimaya (COT), and Dionson Viernes (CSW) won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.

Club President Cesar Ballad says that aside from encouraging the students to join the contested activities and developing their self-confidence, the activity aims “…to bring out [the participants’] best in Math.

Mr. Jason Ubina, Ms. Sheyl Palattao, Mr. Erwil Cariaga, and Mr. Erik Battung served as the board of judges during the event.


Officers of the Math Club are comprised of BSEd Math Majors from the School of Liberal Arts and Teacher Education (SLATE) while the members are from the different schools and colleges of the university. Ms. Klarissa Taguinod and Mr. Rolando Acebedo serve as their advisers.
